Have you ever wondered about events that may have helped shape you into the person you are today?
I remember once when I was about 10 years old, I begged my mom to throw me a "chinese" themed birthday party. She agreed.
My mom and I set out to find all of the accessories. Keep in mind this was over 25 years ago and you couldn't just go into any store and find chopsticks or paper lanterns. We drove to the city where more "cultural" stores were abundant.

We came home with chopsticks, bowls, paper lanterns and fortune cookies. We set up a table low to the ground and my birthday guests and I sat on pillows. My mother made us chicken chow mein to eat. We finished up with fortune cookies and of course, cake!
It wasn't "authentic" but my mom did her best with the resources we had available. I think my little friends might have been in a slight state of shock, thinking, "what kind of birthday party was this!" I on the other hand was on cloud nine and the only thing that could have made it more perfect was, having a "kimono" to wear.
Today, with everything so accessible via the internet; possibilities are endless when it come to celebrating other cultures or feeding your curiosity!

I'm so glad my parents never discouraged my curiosity of other cultures. It is still alive and kickin' to this day.
