Whenever I hear Industria Del Amor or the Kumbia Kings I am reminded of when I first started learning Spanish. This was such a fun time. My really awesome friend who is from Colombia, suggested I do everything in Spanish. She told me reading the lyrics as I was listening to the actual song would be great practice.
Time to find some musica! I made a trip to Discolandia. My friend came with me. I was too nervous to go inside and try to find something by myself. I was afraid someone might come up to me and ask me what I was looking for and I would have no clue how to answer. So we went inside the store and of course someone came up to us. My friend did all the talking and I left with an Industria Del Amor CD. I did not have a CD player in my car. I was dying to get home and listen to it.
Once home, I unwrapped the CD like a crazy woman so anxious to hear what I had just bought. I popped it in and......
it was sweet.
I can't lie. I expected something different. I'm not sure what I expected, but that wasn't it. I know Industria Del Amor is huge. They are very talented. Their music is beautiful. Very sweet and romantic. I did listen to my CD daily and read the lyrics while listening to the music. Mi amiga was right! I was learning knew words.
A couple of weeks later, my best friend and I went shopping. We stopped by Best Buys and I headed over to the Latin music section. "Hmmm.... I wonder who Kumbia Kings are?" I thought as I picked up their CD. I decided to take a gamble and buy it. I had no idea that A.B. Quintanilla (the creator of KK) was Selena's brother at the time.
Once in my friend's car, we popped that CD in and I was BLOWN AWAY! I instantly fell in love. Now this is what I was looking for! I couldn't wait to get home and read the lyrics!!!
Take a listen at the two different styles of music.
Industria Del Amor
Kumbia Kings
(Yes I know the guy from Intocable is in this video but, "Fuistes Mala" is one of my fav songs so he get's a little recognition too. haha!)
What's your vote? Has anyone else out there used music to help you learn another language?
I love Intocable and Kumbia Kings, big shout out to Tejas. Insert grito here! So, my vote is them. Biased, I know...
ReplyDeleteI understand you being biased. LOL
DeleteTejas is a great place! Intocable is pretty awesome too! Put Los Kumbia Kings and Intocable together and it is a win win situation, no matter how you look at it. Thanks for commenting amiga.
I must admit I never appreciated Spanish music until moving to El Salvador. I'll have to check out these 2 groups. Here is my Throwback Thursday:

Great post! I loved the pictures! Nothing like a father's love for his son.
DeleteOkay, have to agree. The Kumbia Kings win hands-down. I couldn't take more than 10 seconds of Industria Del Amor. Hello: put me to sleep. *lol* I guess you'd have to be in the mood for it. Thank you for sharing this memory, Amiga, and for starting this meme.
ReplyDeleteAquí te dejo mi enlace : ) :

My feeling exactly dear Ezzy! Industria del Amor puts me to sleep.
DeleteAmiga, I loved your post! What an awesome picture and memories to go along with it. I had a tear in my eye by the end of it.
Abrazos
I'm a Kumbia Kings girl, too, and I also like Intocable. It is helpful to listen to music in another language when you are trying to learn the language or refresh your memory. You just have to be careful what you listen to - too much reggaeton gave me quite the vocabulary, none of it appropriate for polite conversation, lol!
ReplyDeleteMy throwback is here: http://www.borderlinesavage.com/2012/04/first-birthday-with-trash-barrels.html
Susan,
DeleteSo true! I had a Fulanito CD and would be going around the house singing some of those lyrics and my hubby would always tell me, "I can't believe your singing that!" LOL
Great post! Thanks for participating. Your picture is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! I love candid shots!
That's something that I've always done since starting to learn Spanish! And whenever someone asks me how I learned Spanish, I'm sure to mention that. And.....I have a serious weakness for Kumbia Kings. I LOVE THEM. I really wish they were still making music. I have to admit I don't know who Industria Del Amor is.....guess I'll have to check them out!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Borderline Savage, though. I listened to a lot of Daddy Yankee and Calle 13 when I first started learning. You can imagine the words I was learning. Not really helpful en la tienda, but it came in handy when guys were trying to pick me up.
Josie,
DeleteThanks for commenting. I've never really listened to Industria del Amor since that 1st CD. I wish they were still making music too. =(
Yep, the things we learn from Reggaeton are not very useful en la tienda or around familia... but if your like me, the beat just gets your attention and before you know it, your sucked in!
I'm not really into any kind of Mexican music. But, I think next week I will play along. I am so tired right now, I am surprised I am able to type! :)
ReplyDeleteGood idea, your Throwback Thursdays! Fun!
Glad you like the Throwback Thursdays. I can't wait for you to participate. Join in anytime amiga.
DeleteGet some rest and I hope you have a great weekend!
I have always loved Kumbia Kings, Industria Del Amor is new to me.
ReplyDeleteMy all time throwback mexican music is Monchy y Alexandra. They are actually from the D.R. But I hear their music here in mexico city evry oncein awhile, bachata style is still popular here in some places. It reminds me of when my hubby and ai were firat dating, and a 26 hour long road trip we took (for me to meet family he had in the states for the FIRST time!) ...we only took one cd. Monchy y Alexandra.
I love the bachata style music! I remember Monchy y Alexandra. We heard them a time or two at some parties...
DeleteI bet you knew the words to that CD by heart after your 26 hr long drive. hehehee!
Thanks for commenting!
I'm from Texas, so I love me some Tejano Cumbias :) Here is my throwback thursday: http://www.florecitagrowingup.com/2012/04/throwback-thursday-first-one.html
ReplyDeleteFlor,
DeleteI didn't know you were from Texas! Thanks for participating. I read your post and the pictures of you and your 1st born are precious! I really enjoyed it!
Being that husband is Tejano, I have to go with Kumbia Kings. They remind me of when we first started dating... :-)
ReplyDeleteLooks like Kumbia Kings are the winner with this bunch! They really were an awesome group.... so no surprise there.
