Hippie Memories

My family likes to refer to me as the "hippie" of the group.  I differ with my political views.  I am totally make LOVE and not war, and I am a "free spirit."

When I was around 10 my family and I went on a road trip. We stopped at a rest stop and I remember seeing these girls and guys sitting in the grass barefoot, talking and laughing.  The girls had on white flowy skirts and flowers in their hair.  I remember being in awe.  They looked like they had no worries and were so peaceful, just enjoying the moment to the fullest.  It is an image that is engraved in my memory.  I'm still not sure why that memory is so vibrant.  As we were leaving the rest stop, I remember seeing their "hippie" van and thinking to myself that I wasn't ready to leave just yet.  I wanted to stay and watch them a little longer.

A couple of weeks ago I went school shopping with my son.  We went into a store (do not remember the name of it) and once again, I was in awe!

Whatever incense they were burning smelled wonderful.  My son and I felt right at home because "cumbia" was playing. (hahaha! go figure...)

They had the long flowy skirts, incense, essential oils, and so much more!

Here are some of the bags they had.  I wanted them all!

They also had some really interesting jewerly and wall art.

I was very surprised at the amount of  Mexican flavor they had going on in the store.  Here is a shelf dedicated to "Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead."

They also had some Guatemalan worry dolls.  Luckily I didn't have a lot of worries that day or else I would have bought them.  I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to have some on hand though, in case the need arises.

I wish I could share the whole store with you.  I decided to stop taking pics with my cellphone because the employees would probably wonder why I was capturing so many memories. (haha)

When I left, I immediately started reminiscing about the "hippies" I saw at the rest stop that day.

I plan on going back to the store when I am not in such a rush and have time to make an actual purchase.

Do you have a vivid memory from childhood that you feel influences things you like or are drawn to?  I'd love to hear about it.

Que Pasa, USA?

It's Throwback Thursday.  Please leave your link below if you participated.

Before I knew I'd learn to speak Spanish or marry my Mexican husband, I watched this show religiously.  I can't remember how I found it or what station I use to watch it on but, I was hooked after the 1st episode I saw.

Que Pasa, U.S.A.? was America's 1st bilingual sitcom according to Wikipedia.  The show was centered around la familia  Pena.  The grandparents were the absolute funniest!  I also loved Sharon, the amiga gringa and Violeta, la amiga Cubana.  Oh, and let's not forget Joe, the brother.... he was so handsome!  Actually, everyone is this show was pretty hilarious.

If you've never seen it and  have some grasp of the Spanish language (heck, even if you don't), check it out.   I wish they would run these episodes on TV Land.  I have discovered you can buy the episodes on DVD, which I very well may do.

Get ready to laugh....
Below I've added a couple of my favorite clips.
Enjoy

Fruit Pizza

It's Throwback Thursday.  Please leave your link below if you participated.

Fruit Pizza!  This is one of my favorite desserts of all time.  I remember being introduced to fruit pizza when I was probably around 7 or 8.  My friend's mom use to make them.  I absolutely loved going to her house and being surprised by the fruit pizza sitting on the stove, that her mom had just prepared.

One day while reminiscing, I thought of the fruit pizzas I use to eat at my friend's house when I lived in Alabama.  I got online and looked up the recipe.  I'm not sure if it is the recipe my friend's mom used, but it taste pretty close.

When summer arrives each year, you can betcha I'll be making a fruit pizza.  It is a perfect summer dessert.  I love to use peaches, strawberries, blueberries, mangoes, and pineapple.

Yesterday, we went to a 4th of July family cookout.  I brought dessert.  This year's fruit pizza was patriotic.  I tried my best to make a red, white and blue flag.  Not bad for my 1st attempt.

If you've never tried this delicious summer dessert, here's the recipe!

( I made a rather large one, enough for about 12 people.  You can half this recipe to serve a smaller group...)

Ingredients
2 rolls of refrigerated sugar cookie dough
 2 blocks of cream cheese
 1 tsp of vanilla extract
 1/4 cup of powdered sugar
 fresh fruit (around 3 cups)

Directions
Take the refrigerated cookie dough and smush out onto a large baking pan.  Bake as directed on package.  (350 for 10 mins.)  After baking, let it cool COMPLETELY!

Combine 2 blocks of softened cream cheese and 1 tsp. of vanilla with a mixer.  Slowly add 1/4 cup of powdered sugar and mix well until you have a creamy mixture.

Put your cream cheese icing on cooled cookie crust  and smooth over to cover completely.

Wash, drain, cut fruit.  Layer in rows, zigzag, however you like.  In my case, I used blueberries, strawberries, and some white icing with a star tip. (... because I wanted an American flag)  You can use as many types of fruit as you want and make any design you want.

Does anyone out there like fruit pizza as much as I do?  I'd love to hear what types of fruit you use.

Cabbage Patch Kids

Did you grow up in the 80's?  If so, you probably remember the Cabbage Patch Doll frenzy going on.  These dolls were a hot item.  Stores could not keep them stocked.  People were fighting each other trying to grab the last Cabbage Patch Kid on the shelf.

The dolls came with a birth certificate and their name was already picked out.  The dolls smelled like baby powder and the designer Xavier Roberts signed his name on the little bottoms of the dolls.

These dolls were so hard to find.  My grandmother gave me my 1st Cabbage Patch Kid doll and I remember being on top of the world.  Her name was Henrietta.

Then my best friend broke the news to me that a shipment of dolls had just came in and her father bought her a boy.  I begged my parents to take me to the store to see if we could find a boy.  My parents and I hopped in the car and drove to the store.

There were only a couple left.  All of the caucasion dolls were gone.  I begged my parents!  I have to have a boy! I picked mine out.  His name was Humphrey.   Mmmmm!  He smelled so good.  Just like baby powder.

My friend and I would take our dolls for a walk around the neighborhood every day in their strollers!  We were serious about our Cabbage Patch Kids!  I remember once, feeling heartbroken because someone couldn't believe that my parents had purchased me an African American doll.  I couldn't understand why this was a big deal.  I now understand racism and prejudice more clearly than I did back then.

I'm sure I have Henrietta and Humphrey around here somewhere.  I have some boxes my parents gave me up in the attic.  Just thinking about those dolls makes me want to go drag them out of the box to see if they still have that baby powder smell.

Did anyone out there have a Cabbage Patch Kid doll growing up?  Do you remember their name?

Embarrassing Times

I owe everyone a Throwback Thursday post, so here ya go!  Not only is this a major throwback but one of the most embarrassing moments of my life!

Does anyone out there remember webtv?  Well, before everyone was running around with I-phones and I-pads, way before everyone had a lap top, a computer at home and even Google;  there was webtv.  This was the closest I could come to an Internet connection way back in the day.

Basically you hooked it up to your tv and I think the phone jack. The tv was your monitor. I used it to learn about the web and for email.  There was no hard drive (at least that I know of), no router, no CD drive, no floppy disc drive, NADA.  So if I wanted to include a picture in my email I had to hook up my camcorder and freeze the image. (Amazing how far things have come!)

My parents lived in a different state at the time.  One day hubby and I decided we'd send my parents a picture of ourselves.  We hooked up the camcorder, zoomed in on our faces, freezed the image, and clicked send.

Skip a couple days ahead.  Camcorder is still hooked up to the webtv.   Everyone who knows me, knows I love to joke around.  One morning I saw the perfect opportunity.  As hubby was sleeping in bed (in only his tighty whiteys!) I decided to turn on the tv and camcorder, zoom in on him from waist down, and freeze the image.  I left it on the tv screen so he could see his photo when he woke up.  I went downstairs and started making breakfast.

Later that morning, hubby came downstairs laughing at my little surprise I left him.

That evening I checked my email.  Someone had sent me a funny joke.  I forwarded it to my parents and to a friend of mine.

A couple of hours later the phone rang.

Me- "Hello?"
Mom- "Hey, I just got your email."
Me- "That was funny, right."
Mom- "Well, I guess if you think pictures of men in their underwear are funny."
OMG! Did I send her that picture of hubby in his undies???!!! (and I started freaking out slightly)
Me- "What?"
Mom- "Yeh, I just got the underwear picture of (insert hubby's name here) and don't even tell me it's not him because I recognize your comforter!"
Ay dios mio!  How in the heck did that happen!
I started apologizing profusely then I remembered....
OMG!  I forwarded that to my friend also!

I dialed her number.

Me- "Erica!"
Erica- "Hey."
Me- "Have you checked your email today?"
Erica- "No, why?  Do I need to?"
Me- "No!  Someone sent me a virus.  It has infected my webtv.  If you get any emails from me, IMMEDIATELY delete them!  Don't open it.  It will infect your webtv!"
Erica- "Oh, ok, thanks for letting me know."

Yes!  I dodged that one!  (as I wiped my forehead)

Now, how am I going to tell hubby that my mom has seen him in his underwear?

Luckily I think my mom has forgotten about the whole incident.  Hubby and I still laugh about this moment today.

Does anyone remember webtv?  Feel free to share an embarrassing moment with me.... so I don't feel so alone ;)

Plastic Balloons

Today is Throwback Thursday. If you participated, please leave your link below in comments.

We are on a family vacation this week. I was contemplating on what to write about when today I experienced a blast from the past!

Does anyone remember Plastic Balloons?

It comes with liquid plastic (I guess) and a blow stick.

You put some of the plastic on the tip of the stick...

Then blow

Pull plastic off stick and pinch the ends together.

Now you have a big plastic  balloon to play with, until it pops.... or you just can't stand it and pop it your self.

I remember playing with these when I was a little girl.  What a cool memory to relive!  Does anyone else remember these plastic balloons/bubbles?

Prank Phone Calls

It's Throwback Thursday.  If you participated, please leave  your link in the comments below.

Who out there loves prank phone calls as much as I do?  I love a good laugh.  I remember when I was younger, prank phone calls use to be a Friday night ritual.  My best friend and I were REALLY good at them.   These days I get my prank phone call fix from YouTube.

While looking through some CDs the other day (I like to listen to music while cleaning and doing laundry), I found an old CD with my name on it.  I put it in and found myself laughing like crazy.

Years ago, a co-worker of mine prank called each one of our offices (dental offices).  I was included in one of the prank calls, so she gave me a copy.  I think by the time she got around to calling our office (there were 14 total) she was running out of ideas.  She basically called and said eating strawberries had turned her teeth red.  It's not as funny as some of the other prank calls on the CD, but I thought for today's Throwback Thursday post; I'd share my prank call debut!

On a different note,  the owner's of the company got a copy of the CD as well and praised me on my "customer service!"  It's funny because we get weird calls all the time at work.  I didn't realize I was being pranked because these types of calls are actually pretty common.

So, without further adieu...

Do you have a favorite prank phone call story or one you like to listen to on YouTube?  Share it with me!  I love to laugh!

Elvis

It's Throwback Thursday!  If you participated please leave your link below.

Have I ever mentioned what a big Elvis fan I am?  Well, I am.  So, one year I dressed my little one up as Elvis for Halloween.  I think this was my most favorite Halloween costume to date.

His thick black hair went perfectly with the costume.  A little gel and voilà!

Lil' Elvis headed to Grandma's house to stock up on candy!

The look on my parent's faces was PRICELESS!

We had the best time trick-or-treating that year.  He had no clue why he was such a hit.  What a special treat for me to be able to hang out with the "king!"

Here's a little Elvis to get your day going!  Enjoy!

Long Lost Friend from Peru

It's Throwback Thursday.... you know what to do!

Last week something incredible happened.  While watching t.v., something came on the screen about Peru.
(you know, the country in South America!)  I started to think about a dear friend of mine who lives there.  We lost contact many years ago. I decided just to see what would pop up if I typed his name in the search box on Facebook. (I mean, everyone uses facebook, right?)  To my surprise, my friend had a facebook account!  We've spent the past couple of days exchanging emails and catching up.  So, today's Throwback Thursday post is dedicated to my Long Lost Amigo de Peru!

imgae credit: worldatlas.com

Remember when I decided I wanted to learn Spanish?  Remember the friend who told me to do EVERYTHING in Spanish?  Well one of the things I did was look for a pen pal.  If my memory serves me correct, I posted on a message board that I was trying to learn Spanish and was looking for a pen pal.  I received a response from a girl who had a friend who was interested in learning English and she forwarded his information.

My new friend was from Peru!  (a country I knew little about...)

My friend and I started exchanging emails.  I had been practicing speaking Spanish but had little experience writing in Spanish.  This was great practice!  I remember making many mistakes and learning tons.  I remember one mistake in particular.
My Spanish was very limited.  My emails reflected that; they were simple and basic.  I remember writing a list of things I had plans to do.  Wash clothes, go to the park, etc...    My "to do list" also included *paint my nails* which I translated literally and wrote *pintar mis clavos* (I had written *paint my "nails" the "nails" you use with a hammer!)  HAHAHA!   My friend sent me a reply email asking, "why I was painting nails?"....  as in the "nails" you use with a hammer....  I eventually figured out I had used the word "clavos" (nails you use with a hammer) not uñas (actual finger nails).  That is what learning a 2nd language is all about!   Mistakes!  This is just one small example of the growth I experienced while communicating with my friend.

We were both curious about each other's cultures and countries.  I asked my friend if he had a VCR because I wanted to record my family and sights where I lived.  The 1st package I sent to Peru was very expensive.  I had to find a cheaper way if we were going to do our video exchange.  After talking with another friend of mine here in the states, I found a taxi company whose owners made frequent trips to Peru.  They agreed to take items I wanted to send to my friend back to Peru with them and he would go to their place of business in Peru and pick them up.  This arrangement worked out great!

My video footage included:

Where I worked.  Mi amiga de Colombia translated and took my new friend on a tour of our office and explained our many duties.

A family party we had in Alabama, celebrating my grandfather's birthday.

My apartment, my town, my friends.

Stone Mountain park

He in return sent me a video back of where he lived, a party at his house and his friends.  It was really cool!

We also exchanged gifts.  I sent a couple of things including some "Barbies" for his nieces.  He in return sent me an alpaca sweater!  How awesome was that!

We also talked some on the phone.  My Spanish wasn't that great but I was learning.  I had to have my amiga de Colombia translate once.....  I eventually bought a phone card (1st time I bought a phone card to call another country) and we ended up being able to communicate pretty good despite the language barrier.

This was an awesome experience and I credit this friendship with providing me with tons of knowledge.  I'm happy we have reconnected on Facebook and are able to pick up where we left off.  A lot has happened in 10+ years.  I'm now married and have a child.  He is now a professor and has traveled a lot!  He even traveled to the U.S. and was in my home state of Georgia.  Unfortunately, he could not contact me because I had moved.  My number changed and I was not in the phone book.  Hopefully one day we will have the chance to meet in person and I can introduce him to my family...

Until then, he is in Peru and I am in the states but our friendship continues on!

La Cascada

It's Throwback Thursday! Don't forget to leave your link below in comments if you participated.

I remember our 1st trip to Mexico like it was yesterday.  Hubby's familia took us to "la cascada" (a waterfall close to where he grew up).
I decided to get out our video of that trip.  I wanted to share some of it with you all. The video was taken ten years ago!   Long story short, I'm very technically challenged.  I had to record the video from my computer onto my cell then upload it to YouTube, so it is not perfect.  Once hubby is home from his trip, maybe he can help me figure out a better way to share other parts of our trip one day.

This clip is of when we got to one part of the water fall.  El Rancho is in a very hot and dry area, so this was a delight to see. (although during this trip it was a little cool during the days, but still VERY dry.)  The water was cold and I could have spent all day there.
There were some areas that were quite steep!  I thought I was going to slide down the side of the mountain a couple of times.
We ended up going inside a cave.  This is when I learned the word "agachate."  I hope I'm spelling that right.  If you listen closely, you can hear someone saying, "Tara! Tara! Cuidado! Agachate!!"  (Tara, Tara, careful! duck/crouch down....  so I wouldn't hit my head.)

Sorry about the quality of the video.  Hopefully hubby can work his magic and I can post more of my first trip to Mexico one day.

Happy Thursday!

The Masquerade

OMG! Yes, (again) I know it is not Thursday. For some reason I'm having some technical difficulties. I need to change something and it re-posted my Thursday post to today. Oh well...

It's Throwback Thursday!  If you participated please link up below in comments.

One day I hope to be able to introduce everyone to my BFF! (if she ever gets her blog going...)
We've been best friends for 26 years.  OMG!  I feel old.

Anyways, in our teen years we were practically joined at the hip. Well, come to think of it we still are.  We live 10 minutes from one another and talk to each other daily.  She's more like a sister actually.   Our experiences deserve a blog of it's own because we've got some doozies!

Our favorite night club to go to back in the day was called "The Masquerade."  It is in Atlanta.  It is still around, but I have no idea if it is a "cool" place to hang out anymore.  It had 3 levels.  The bottom level was called "Hell" (full of live music), the middle was called "Purgatory" (bar, pool tables, cage dancers, fortune tellers, a little of everything), the top level was called Heaven (live DJ, dance music).

We were very care free.  (No responsibility, no worries)  We got all dolled up one night and drove out to Atlanta.  Once we got to The Masquerade, we realized it was too early to go inside! Had we forgotten to look at the clock before leaving the house?  Apparently so!  There were only about 20 cars in the parking lot.  No way we were going in yet... we had to make our grand entrance!
(Are you laughing yet?  Yes! We were typical teens and thought all eyes were on us! HA HA HA!)

We decided we would kill some time and drive around Atlanta.

So, we were cruisin'... windows down, sunroof open.  We heard what sounded like a live band.   That got our attention.  We tracked the live music down to a parking garage.   We parked the car and got out.  We walked towards the music and stumbled upon a party!  "Woo-hoo," we thought.  What a great way to kill some time!  Some people saw us approaching and were SUPER friendly!  They invited us in and offered us some refreshments.  "How nice!", we thought.

Once fully in the parking garage we realized that some people were dressed in tathered clothing.  Some people had clearly not taken a shower that day or maybe all week!  We continued walking around.  There was a table with refreshments, brown paper bags that had ready to eat meals in them.  We noticed a lady standing behind a table giving out clothes.  Some one approached us and told us we had made it just in time for a closing prayer.  We all gathered in a circle and held hands.  I don't remember exactly what the gentleman said while praying.  What I do remember is, the homeless man holding my hand, quietly crying during that prayer.

We walked back to our car and decided to go home.  After that experience, we were no longer in a "party" mood.

I think my friend and I grew up a little that day.  We left Atlanta that night thinking about more than just partying.

When my friend and I reminisce, we always get a good laugh about the night we "went to The Masquerade and ended up at a homeless outreach."
We are in no way laughing at the outreach program or the homeless.  We are very thankful for the eye opening experience we had that night.

We are however,  laughing at the fact that we just walked right into the event taking place like we knew what was going on!  I don't think it dawned on us until we were in the prayer circle praying!

Fluffy Girl and Sofi

Today is Throwback Thursday.  If you participated, please leave a link to your post in the comments section.  Oh, and I made a button if anyone wants to add it to their post (or future post).  Grab the code on the left of my page.

This Throwback Thursday post is dedicated to two of our "smaller and more finicky" family members.

Fluffy Girl and Sofi
Fluffy on Left and Sofi on Right

They are best friends.  We adopted them over 9 years ago.  I remember telling hubby I wanted a kitten. He was like, "ok, whatever you want to do..."
I adopted Fluffy Girl from a sweet lady who had found her under a bush.

About a month later I adopted Sofi who was found in a parking lot outside of a music store.  Sofi was sick but after a trip to the vet, some antibiotics, and other meds, she recovered just fine.

Fluffy was a little jealous of Sofi when I brought her home but it didn't take long for them to become best friends.

Fluffy Girl is the sweetest cat ever!  She is great at catching bugs that may sneak in the house.  She absolutely loves our son and will spend hours laying in bed with him at night.  She treats him like one of her own.  She will lick his hair as if he was one of her kittens!  She never gets mad when our son picks her up and carries her around the house like a sack of potatoes.

Sofi is a little more finicky!  She doesn't want to be bothered by anyone!  She doesn't want to be petted by anyone except me.  I love taking naps with her in the afternoon.  She'll hop up in my lap and we doze off together.  She is my 2nd alarm clock.  She wakes me up every morning like clock work.  Meowing and meowing until I drag my self out of  bed, empty their daily treat of  "Fancy Feast" into the food dish,  only to walk away  looking at me with a - Ha Ha! You fell for it again?  I changed my mind, not hungry now-  kind of look!

Don't make yourself dizzy looking at this picture!  This was how my apartment bathroom was decorated back in the day too!  LOL  Double Throwback....  Anyways, Sofi loved watching our fish "Poncho" when she was a kitten.  I'm sure Poncho loved his lovely "I'm stuck in bathroom and feel dizzy habitat!

These cats are living the life of luxury!  Being waited on hand and foot and receiving tons of love.  They are part of the family.  My son is very protective of them.  Always making sure the doors are shut good so there are no "escapees!"

It's hard to believe they have been with us for over 9 years!
We love them dearly!

La Sequia

Technical difficulties.  Yes, I know it is not Thursday, but if you are a regular reader you know that this post was originally posted on a Thursday.  I went back in to add the button and it reposted it  today.  Oops!

Throwback Thursdays

I'm going to be doing something a little different on Thursdays.
On my Throwback Thursday posts, you'll find a picture, song, memory, anything from the past.  Everyone is welcomed to join in.  If you decide to participate, please stop by my blog and leave your link in the comment section below.  Gracias!

La Sequia

This is a picture of  la sequia in the rancho where my hubby is from.  I'll never forget the 1st time I saw it!  QUE HERMOSA!!  The Mexican's familia probably thought I was crazy because I was always snapping pictures of it.

Hubby is from Coahuila,  northern Mexico.  It was very hot and dry when I visited.  This stream of water that went for miles and miles was beautiful to me.

If you look closely in the picture above you can see some kids playing in the water. I really wish I would have taken the time to stick my feet in and enjoy the beauty that surrounded me.  Hopefully one day I will have the chance again.

Here are a few more pictures I took...

There were beautiful trees full of green leaves just inviting you to sit in the shade!

I remember drawing pictures when I was a child and having little streams in my drawings.  It's hard to believe that many years later, in a different country, I saw what I had always pictured in my head.

The Mexican never really understood my obsession with la sequia.  While on a walk with his sister, I started taking a lot of pictures and wanted to take even more. I think she thought I was a little weird... so I tried to chill out a bit with all my picture taking.

I snuck this photo, just because I was amazed.  This young girl was cooling off after washing clothes.  I thought about the hard work it took to wash those clothes by hand.  I also thought about how lucky she was to enjoy that cool little dip she took.  Oh! How I so wanted to join her.  I would have even helped with the clothes.  I didn't dare say anything to my cuñada.  She'd probably really think I was crazy then...

Industria Del Amor vs. Kumbia Kings

Today is Throwback Thursday.  If you participated, please leave your link in the comments below.

Whenever I hear Industria Del Amor or the Kumbia Kings I am reminded of when I first started learning Spanish.  This was such a fun time.  My really awesome friend who is from Colombia, suggested I do everything in Spanish.  She told me reading the lyrics as I was listening to the actual song would be great practice.

Time to find some musica!  I made a trip to Discolandia.  My friend came with me.  I was too nervous to go inside and try to find something by myself.  I was afraid someone might come up to me and ask me what I was looking for and I would have no clue how to answer.  So we went inside the store and of course someone came up to us.  My friend did all the talking and I left with an Industria Del Amor CD.  I did not have a CD player in my car. I was dying to get home and listen to it.

Once home, I unwrapped the CD like a crazy woman so anxious to hear what I had just bought.  I popped it in and......
it was sweet.

I can't lie.  I expected something different.  I'm not sure what I expected, but that wasn't it.  I know Industria Del Amor is  huge.  They are very talented.  Their music is beautiful.  Very sweet and romantic.  I did listen to my CD daily and read the lyrics while listening to the music.  Mi amiga was right!  I was learning knew words.

A couple of weeks later, my best friend and I went shopping.  We stopped by Best Buys and I headed over to the Latin music section.  "Hmmm.... I wonder who Kumbia Kings are?" I thought as I picked up their CD. I decided to take a gamble and buy it.  I had no idea that A.B. Quintanilla (the creator of KK) was Selena's brother at the time.

Once in my friend's car, we popped that CD in and I was BLOWN AWAY!  I instantly fell in love.  Now this is what I was looking for!  I couldn't wait to get home and read the lyrics!!!

Take a listen at the two different styles of music.

Industria Del Amor

Kumbia Kings
(Yes I know the guy from Intocable is in this video but, "Fuistes Mala"  is one of my fav songs so he get's a little recognition too. haha!)

What's your vote?  Has anyone else out there used music to help you learn another language?
