Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L. James

Yep!  I read it.

I heard people talking about it, but when my best friend told me... "Oh, you NEED to read this book,"  I knew it had to be good.  After all, we are like a carbon copy of oneanother.

Sometimes, I get so busy with work and life that I barely have time to watch a quick t.v. show, much less read a book.    After downloading it online, I read the 1st couple of pages and was wondering if it was going to hold my interest.  The next thing I knew, it was 3 hours later and my hubby was frustrated because we had "things to do" and I was still buried in the pages of Fifty Shades of Grey.

I'm sure you've heard of this book, but just in case you are living under a rock, like I was....
It is a trilogy.  There are a total of 3 books;  Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed.

The story is about an innocent, straight laced, college graduate named Anastasia Steele who meets a powerful,  control obsessed, billionaire named Christian Grey.  There is an immediate attraction between them.

Christian Grey has reasons for being the way he is, obsessive, controlling, and dominant.  Oh, did I mention he is into BDSM?  Un-huh!  You read that right.  He wants Ana to sign a contract to be his submissive.    Christian is surprised when he finds out Ana is still a virgin, so he agrees to make love to her 1st.  She eventually signs his contract after clarification of some areas and making her own changes to it.  After one incident she decides this is not for her and leaves him....   And that's just the beginning!

I frantically read all three books.  I had them finished in a couple of weeks.  By the end of the story, I was sad.  Not because it ended in a sad way.  The problem was, I did NOT want the story to end!  I'll be the first to admit that I went through "Fifty Shades of Grey withdrawals."

The book has been called "Mommy porn" although I tend to disagree.  This book is erotic fiction and although I would not have walked into a book store and picked it up, I'm really glad I read it.  I've read both bad and good reviews of the book.  I think the fact that over 16 million copies have been sold in the U.S. alone, speaks for its-self.

I even read some to my husband.  Needless to say, he was intrigued.  I looked online to see if it is available in Spanish, and yes it is!  Cincuenta Sombras de Grey.

I've had numerous patients at work, bring their copy of  the book to their appointments.  Once I let them know I've read it too, it's an immediate conversation starter.  We discuss the characters and different events that happened throughout the book.  I saw women reading their copies while on vacation,  at coffee shops,  the park,  etc...

Rumor has it that a movie is in the works. I have no clue how they are going to make a movie, but I guess that is not for me to worry about.  Everyone on the internet is buzzing about who should play the role of Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey.
William Levy's name has been floating around out there as a possible "Christian Grey."

Uhh, not sure about that. Levy is extremely handsome, but Matt Bomer seems more suitable for the role of Christian Grey to me.

(I am available for casting decisions if the film makers would like to contact me.)

Have you read the book yet?  Did you love it or hate it?  Who would you cast for the role of Christian and Ana?  Would love to hear your thoughts.

Are you going through 50 Fifty Shades of Grey withdrawals?   Well, come back soon and read my review on  Sylvia Day's, CrossFire Novel, "Bared to You."

  1. I have got to get the books before I return to Mexico. I think William Levy is hot in any role!! He is just too fine!! Then again, Matt Bomer is fine too. ;)

My preference in any "mommy porn"scenes would be Vin Diesel though!! Now that would be Heaven!!!!

      I love Vin Diesel too!
      and
YES! You've got to get the books. I'm a huge fan, now that I've finally read them. Let me know what you thought of them after you read the trilogy....

  2. Many online say it's poorly written. As for the "mommy porn" label - not unless there is lengthy discussions of thread count of the sheets and the style of the pillows.

    2. Bill,
It may very well be poorly written.... not sure I've read enough good literature to know the difference. LOL

  3. Wow, Tara! I've not been able to bring myself to read the first one. What's funny is that I see it EVERYWHERE. Beach, subway, at the entrance to B&N, it's inescapable. *lol* I read somewhere yesterday that it's the No. 1 selling book of all-time in the UK, like more than J.K. Rowling. That's freaking unbelievable. I'll probably read the first one out of curiosity. So many people hate it so much that it makes me want to read it for myself. Whatever you're reading, it's nice to escape, even if just for a little while. Glad you enjoyed them, Amiga. :-)

    1. Ezzy,
You will have to let me know if you decide to read them. I've been super surprised by some of the people I've talked to who have really liked the books. You just never know. I loved escaping into them. I know everyone is hung up on the sex in the book, but it actually had a story line and I thought a good one. Oh, and I loved Ana's inner goddess, who frequently speaks.... (most of the bad reviews talks about her inner goddess, but I really liked that part)

    3. Ezzy,
I'd love to hear your story. You've got me all curious now. Hmmmm, Ryan Gossling.... I do not know much about him. He is cute. If he can play a passionate, sensitive, domineering, powerful, mixed up kind of guy.... I'm sure he'll do awesome! I honestly can not wait for the movie. Thanks for passing along the info.

  4. Bomer is definitely better than Levy for the role.

But the book did not end in a sad way - if you've read the third in the trilogy - it is a happy ending.

I've read loads of bad and good and sarcastic reviews about the book too - and they piqued my curiosity - so I thought I'd decide for myself and downloaded the trilogy. Apart from the repetitive phrases and Ana's inner goddess, it was tolerable, really. Well - millions of people are thrilled about it - so it has mass appeal. I guess the idea of the plot appeals to a majority of the readers. Who would not fantasize about a super-handsome, sexy, successful and ultra-rich man who is also amazingly attentive? :-)

I enjoyed reading your post. I prefer to read psychological thrillers / comedy / mystery, though.

    1. Vidya,
Yes, I read all three books and I LOVED the ending! I was sad, because the book ended! haha

I've read many of the bad reviews and I've come to the conclusion that this book is not to be compared with "great works".... well that is ok, I think the author is doing just fine and laughing straight to the bank.

I agree, Christian Grey definitely is ummmm.... attentive! =P

I like to read, mainly biographies. I had no idea erotic fiction was even out there. I think this new category of reading material has peeked my interest some.

  5. I have not read it. I want to write Fifty Shades of Paper Bag first and I don't want to be too derivative so it's best if I wait until I finish my own opus. Mine won't be referred to as "Mommy Porn" more like "Mami in the sack".

  6. I haven't read it but it certainly has made conversations in the pub more interesting. Weirdly in a situation where my straight friends brought up the subject of butt plugs. Strange, bizarre and funny as hell
