No Tengo Dinero

"The Mexican" and I have always spoiled our little one.....  We don't buy him EVERYTHING he wants but if we go to the store and the little one sees something he wants like a candy bar or small toy, we usually buy it.

Well, things started getting out of hand and we realized that we were making a mistake by giving in to his every want when he had a fit inside a store! All eyes on us as he pitched a fit!  It was from that point on that my husband and I decided NO MORE!

I've heard all the stories from The Mexican about he grew up poor..... no money for shoes, food, clothes.  How there were weeks when all they ate were tortillas and beans, or tortillas and eggs.

One day my son and I ran to the store to pick something up.  Little man saw something he wanted. I said no.  He pitched a minor fit, I grabbed his hand and off to the car we marched!

Once in the car I started preaching!  "You can not have everything you see!  You do not get everything you want in this life!  Your dad and I work hard to pay for our family's house, food for you to eat, clothes for you to wear!  Do you know that some kids do not have enough food to eat?  Do you know that they have to choose if they are going to eat breakfast or dinner because there is only enough money for them to eat once a day!"

It was summer, the windows were down, and my son just sat in the back seat listening to me go on and on and on.  He had taken his flip flops off and gotten comfy..... guess he knew I did not plan on stopping.

"Do you know how lucky you are that you have toys?  You have tons of toys!  Some kids have to play with "sticks" because their families don't have enough money to buy them toys.  As a matter of fact, I think you have TOO MANY TOYS!  I think it would be a good idea for you to donate the ones you don't play with.

Did you know when your father was little he had to go to school with out shoes on?  He didn't have any shoes because there wasn't enough money to buy him any.  You are a lucky boy to have all you have!  I don't want to hear any more fits or I'M NEVER BUYING YOU ANYTHING AGAIN and I'm giving all of your toys to kids who do not have any."

We pulled into the driveway.  We live next door to my brother.  My sister in law was outside with some of her relatives and her kids.  Of course when we got out of the car my son made a B line straight to his primos (cousins).  One of his cousins asked, "Where are your shoes?"  My 4 year old yelled...........(in front of everyone) "I DON'T HAVE ANY!  WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO BUY ME ANY SHOES!"

I about fell over.  It was funny!!!  An unforgettable moment.......

Besos!

  2. Leslie,
Thank you so much for checking out my blog. I didn't realize how many of us Gringas are married to Mexicanos....

How do you like living in Mexico? That is a thought my husband and I have discussed. Maybe during summers or possibly after my son graduated, but only part time.

Thanks again for your sweet post! Not sure if you are blogging as well, if so, i'll be checking you out too!
