Easter 2012

I just wanted to share with everyone a little discovery I made.  This year I was so "last minute" when it came to preparing for Easter.  Sadly, I waited too late to make cascarones, so we opted for traditional Easter eggs.

I picked up the only Easter egg dye kit they had left at the store.  After we boiled our eggs and were ready to start dyeing them, I realized I did not have vinegar!  The last thing I wanted to do was drive back to the store and re-enter Easter madness (everyone running around the store for last minute supplies).

I started thinking....   ((watch out folks!))

Vinegar is acidic.  What do I have that is acidic??  I know!
LEMONS!

I substituted vinegar with lemon juice and our eggs came out just fine.  I'll remember this next year.  I hate the smell of vinegar, so it was a win win situation!

Happy Easter!

  1. Cute eggs and cool idea! I would have never thought of it. This is one thing that I miss being here in Mexico, my in laws do not do anything for Easter.

    1. Stephanie,
Thanks for commenting amiga. Looks like you might have to be the one who introduces celebrating Easter to your inlaws.... or when you and your hubby move away, you can decide what you guys will celebrate as una familia! Happy Easter!

    1. Thanks Sarah! This Easter was not very well planned. I would have opted for cascarones but we had a bday celebration as well.... so it was a busy weekend.

  3. You are so smart! The back of my Easter egg dye kit said that you can substitute lemon juice. And you are not alone in being last minute--we dyed our eggs this morning. Better late than never, right? :D

    1. Jen,
Yes! Definitely better late than never. Wow! your package actually said that? I read mine from top to bottom and it never mentioned using lemon. I think some dye kits are in cahoots with vinegar companies! I mean, who would choose vinegar when you can use lemon! I LOVE the smell of lemons and really can't stand vinegar. Happy Easter to you and your family!

  4. That's an ingenious substitution! We didn't make Easter eggs or cascarones, but I always have plenty of vinegar in the house. I'm a bit like the dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding with his Windex, only I've got white vinegar. In any case, I'm glad you had a great (and better smelling) Pascua!

    1. Thanks Susan! Happy Easter to you and your family! Too bad we don't live closer, I'd know where to go to borrow some vinegar. LOL

  5. Those are some funny eggs! I didn't know what you meant about the vinegar until I read the comments. Haven't done Easter eggs in ages!
