Lordy Lordy... Guess who's 40!

A couple of weekends ago, we celebrated hubby's 40th birthday!  I always teased him about the big 40 being right around the corner.  He never thought my jokes were that funny.  I'm not sure if turning forty is a big deal in the Mexican culture.  I tried to explain the whole "over the hill" concept but not quite sure it made much sense to him.  He insisted he is still young and "age" is only a number.  He is right.  I agree age is only a number... but I couldn't pass up this prime opportunity to tease him some more and introduce him to a little "gringo" humor.

In order to rub it in I made sure to add a few special touches.  First, I put a sign in front of our house announcing his big day.

This is the 1st thing he saw upon returning from an out of town trip!   The look on his face when he walked through the door, was priceless!!!

I also made a center piece for the table. (I found this idea on Pinterest)

on the other side it said....

I had mentioned to him a couple of days earlier family was coming over to eat for his birthday.  I asked if he had a special meal request.  I really had hopes of him wanting tamales.  He chose baby back ribs!  (Seriously?  I have no clue how to cook baby back ribs!  He knows I'm not a huge meat eater, plus their is a family of birds living in our grill!)
I obliged. This was "his" day, so I made potato salad, baked beans, garden salad, and ordered the ribs!

Time for cake!

This ice-cream cake was sooooo good!

My mother had brought hubby a little bag over.  I know my mother, so I was dying for him to open it.

Just as I had suspected!
Hubby opened it and said, "Suegra!" after every item he pulled out.  It was pretty funny!

Hair dye to cover his "canas" (grey hairs),  arthritis medicine, corn cushions, Dr. Scholls shoe inserts, acid relief medicine, tums, icyhot muscle rub and more....  That's my mom!  I knew I could count on her!

I think by the end of the day, hubby "got" what a 40th birthday party is all about.  We had a great time!
The funniest part of it all was....
Later that evening, hubby asks.... "Where is the bag my suegra gave me?  I need to use something out of it."
I thought he was joking but nope, he was serious!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMOR!

I remember buying my wife a big 40 sign for the front porch. Seems so so long ago.
You know that over the hill thing - we keep moving the hill.

  4. Happy Birthday, Daniel!! Your mom gives the best gifts, and, best of all, her gift got put to use right away. I was wondering how she was going to top the sewing kit.

Last year, we started to make sure that we visited our favorite Mexican restaurant at birthday time, starting with my Dad's 70th birthday. He wore the birthday sombrero proudly and loved the singing and the attention, and we've done it for everyone since. . . except for my mom (who would NOT like it) and my husband. . . who managed to avoid the place around the time of his birthday. . . I wonder.

    1. Susan,
We did something similar for my son on his birthday. My husband would know "what was up" and avoid like your husband did. I bet your dad did enjoy it though.
      Thanks for commenting amiga!
