Open Heart and an Open Mind

Please visit Bicultural Mom to read all entries into The Multicultural Awareness Blog Carnival!
                                                                  Starts  May 2nd!

Who would have thought, just from learning a different language; my life would be transformed.  After all that is how I met my husband.
Me and the Mexican

I've visited Mexico several times with my husband.  We didn't go to Cancun or somewhere you'd go on vacation..  We went to "el rancho" where my husband grew up.  I got to experience "the real" Mexico!

Riding horses.  The sunset would have made this picture perfect!

I've seen tortillas made from scratch.  I've made mole with my "suegra" (mother in law).
I've eaten goat and  I know how to make an awesome taco!

My eyes from that point on were more open than ever!  I know those trips to Mexico changed me.  What a great experience to see how others live and how things work in other countries.  Although we speak different languages, deep down we are all the same.

Then,

 Our son was born.........

Our son is such a blessing!

The Mexican is an awesome dad.  I want my son to realize how lucky he is to be from both cultures.

Sadly, racism scares me.  My little one has such a sweet soul and kind heart.  I can not imagine someone judging him because he has a father from Mexico and a mother from the U.S.. It infuriates me when I think of the stereotypes I hear from others.  Do they really believe this?  Yes, they do until they "learn" different.

I thank God for my bi-cultural family.  We are blessed to have friends of different colors and  cultures. I am glad we are exposing our son to many different types of music, food, traditions, and knowledge.  Our family has open hearts and open minds.  I want to scream to the world, "Open your minds! You don't know what your missing!"

  3. This post almost made me cry. Especially loved the picture of you with your newborn. You said it right, "Although we speak different languages, deep down we are all the same." Sometimes I just want to scream those words out when I see, read, experience prejudice. We carry an enormous responsibility as parents to educate our children and set a good example. Awesome post, Tara. Un abrazo a todos. : )

  5. That is what I love...The REAL Mexico!!! Everything you said is perfect!! Your son is lucky to come from a culture where fathers are very involved with raising their children! We love watching fathers in Mexico...In the USA, so many fathers walk away from their kids :(
Sounds like you and the Mexican have a good time together!!

    Hey Chica!
    Thanks for leaving a comment.
I love the real Mexico too. I give props to the "real" men out there as well who are stepping up and being a "dad"! I was so lucky to have a great father and I am glad my son has one also!

  8. Beautiful post, amiga! :) I hate to sound like Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana, but I think children from multicultural families get the best of both worlds. :)

  11. What a sweet post! Your little one is lucky to have such loving, open parents... an example and lesson that will undoubtedly help him navigate the nuances of bicultural life. And I love the pictures! I'm still shy about posting pics.... but maybe someday!

  12. Vaca Loca,
Thanks for commenting! My husband doesn't want too many pics of him or my son posted that is why there are not that many. You'll see I do mostly side shots or where they are not looking directly at the camera. Me on the other hand..... I'm shy too! Since, this was a more serious post.... I dug out some old pics.
    Glad you stopped by amiga!

  13. Beautiful! And, yes, it is scary thinking about how to possibly protect the hearts of our little ones from the ignorance of the world we all live in. I can tell you this...he will be stronger because of the diversity within him. I have no doubt that you will do your best to prepare him. These children of ours are gifts to the world! Great post :-)

  15. Hey Tara, I feel you girl, racism scares me too. All we can do is try and protect our little ones as much as possible and pray that when they go out in the world they will be alright.
