Angry Bird Birthday

My son is obsessed with

so, when my husband suggested we throw him an Angry Birds birthday party
I knew it would be a winner!

Never heard of Angry Birds?

It is a game played on smart phones.  Basically you fling birds from a slingshot...aiming to knock down those pesky egg stealing pigs.  Here is a little clip that explains why these birds are so ANGRY!

This party took a little planning but I'm happy to report it was indeed a success!

We had family and some close friends over to celebrate our son turning six!  Sadly my hubby had to leave the morning of the party to go out of town.  Hopefully he can re-live a little of the party through this post.

I've been working hard on Angry Bird pinatas for the past couple of weeks. You can not find Angry Bird pinatas anywhere!  None of the stores have them and the ones online are kind of pricey!

This was my very first time making a pinata!  You would have thought my husband would have come in handy when it came to making pinatas...being from Mexico and all.... but nope!  That story will be a post for a different day!

Making a pinata was actually quite therapeutic and a lot of fun.  I came out a lot cheaper making my own.  I was able to purchase all the materials at the dollar store and only spent $5.

Another complication was the cake.  No one has Angry Bird cakes, so I had to improvise.  I ordered Angry Bird cupcake toppers online for around $8.  Since I'm not the best baker in the world, I ordered a cake from Wal-mart and we decorated it ourselves.

The birthday boy was impressed!

For decorations we cut out some water color paintings my son had made previously and taped them on the windows.

I also found a cute idea using balloons over at The Party Animal Blog.

I made some hors d'oeuvres for the adults.
(Wish I had better pics guys... I was pushed for time, so the whole presentation here, doesn't do these 2 dips justice)

Spinach Dip

and

Buffalo Chicken Dip with celery sticks

Now it was time to get the party started!

The kiddos were wound up!  Luckily it was a cool fall day and wasn't too cold to enjoy the outdoor activities I had planned.

First, we went outside to find the Angry Bird's eggs! (aka. cascarones... don't know what a cascaron is?  Find out here!)
Who would have know this Mexican tradition would be perfect for an Angry Bird party?!?

The cascarones were a huge hit!  It was so much fun watching the boys run around smashing the eggs over each other!  They had a blast.  I'm so glad I saved my egg shells for the past 2 months and that my parents helped me out by saving theirs as well.  We had over 50 and they went fast.

The kids even got us!
Here is a pic of my best friend's hair after her son got her with un cascaron!

Here is another one of my over exaggerated video clips. The boys are running around breaking the cascarones.  They were covered in confetti and glitter!  The moms can thank me later....haha!

We then moved on to the pinata.  That was a lot of fun too.  Unfortunately with hubby out of town I was in charge of the pinata and didn't get any pictures.  The kids had fun grabbing up all of the candy once it came pouring out.

Time for cake!
We sang happy birthday and had cake and ice cream.

Our little guy is so blessed!  He was very fortunate to receive some really sweet gifts. One of which included an Angry Birds game called "Knock on Wood" where the kids built there own angry bird scene and used the sling shot to try and knock the pigs down.  They couldn't wait to get that out of the box!

Our son was so happy to receive  some cool art stuff from his brother who lives in Puerto Rico.  As soon as his guests left he immediately opened that up and started coloring.

From dad and I he received an Angry Bird sweatshirt and a flying falcon.  He is also obsessed with falcons.  I found this cool remote control falcon that flies at Toys R Us.  After I used the birthday coupon they sent me in the mail, another coupon I already had, and going to the store on a day they were having a sale, I got the falcon for $15!

The fun I saw the kids having and the smiling faces made it worth every bit of extra effort I put into this party.  It was inexpensive to put together and probably the funnest birthday party he has had to date.

VIVA LOS ANGRY BIRDS!

  2. What a great party! Looks like everyone had a really good time, Tara. Your piñatas look fabulous, amiga. You'll have to post directions on how to make them--I have 2 birthdays coming up and I may need your help :-) My kids also love Angry Birds, but recently they found a new game that they love--Fruit Ninjas. Maybe we'll do a fruit chopping party! I am inspired by your creativity! Thanks for sharing! Happy Birthday to your 6-year-old big kid and hugs to your family xoxo

  3. Anon,
Thanks! Feel free to steal any ideas. That is one of the reasons I wrote this post. I was able to find tons of ideas online, but no one had mentioned making cascarones....which is perfect for an Angry Bird Party!

    Jen,
Thanks for your sweet words! Making the pinatas was super easy! I just may do a tutorial! I will definitely be making more in the future.

A fruit chopping party sounds like a great party idea! (I'm going to have to check out that game. Sounds like a great way to get kids to eat more fruit!) If you do one, I hope you'll post about it. I'd love to see what you plan.

    Thanks for commenting.
Hugs to you and your family too!

  4. Okay Tara, so now I'm the one who has never heard of "Angry Birds." Your piñatas turned out fantastic and I'm sure your son was as happy as could be! You've created wonderful memories for him. :)

  5. I still have a headache from last year's cascarones. You are truly inventive. What a cool party for kids AND adults. I never understood the idea behind cute pinatas like Snow White or Sponge Bob and then taking a bat to beat the crap out of them. Beating angry birds doesn't seem sadistic.

  6. Jackie,
So now you know about Angry Birds and I know about Monster High! Thanks for the comment on my pinatas! My son was very happy!

    Rita,
I thought the same exact thing when the kids were hitting the pinata! LOL

  7. We are Angry Birds junkies at our house, too. I think my Color Nook is used more to play that game than actually reading books on it. Pretty sad!

    Everything looks great!
