Thermostat Battle

Today when I walked in the door from work, I immediately starting sweating!  I ripped off my jacket and started gasping for air!  Damn it's hot in here!  I went over to the thermostat..... it was set to 80!  I went into our office and there sat hubby wearing a knit hat, jogging pants, and a sweat shirt!

Me, "OMG!  Are you not burning up?"
The Mexican, "No!  It's cold!"
Me, "OUTSIDE!  It feels like a sauna in here!"
The Mexican, "Well, I'm cold."

I decided to avoid an unnecessary argument and secretly set the thermostat back to 65.

This is an argument we have quite a bit.  In the summer and winter, I like to keep our thermostat set at a constant temp that will keep us comfortable and avoid expensive bills. I have explained over and over, if we are cold or hot we should adjust the temp a couple of degrees not a whole whopping 10-20!!!!  and leave it there all day long!

We've had argument after argument.  It never does any good.  It's almost like The Mexican thinks I'm insulting his "man hood" by trying to explain how the thermostat works and what temperature we should keep it on.  Ay dios mio!  Imaginate if I sang this song to him?

I doubt he had central heating and air growing up en el rancho.  For some reason he doesn't get it..... or maybe he does and  is just ignoring me.  I can be a tad bit controlling when it comes to the thermostat.

I can remember my mom getting mad at me when I was a teen.  I didn't want to sweat while styling my hair and applying my make-up, so I'd set the thermostat to like 50, get ready to go out,  then leave the house.

You know,  maybe this is karma paying me back!

  2. I miss having a thermostat!! I used to keep it on 75 in winter and 72 in summer!
Here, unfortunately, no, whatever mother nature wants outside is what it is inside unless, I can get a good A/C this summer which will start in like 2-3 weeks!!

  3. Stephanie,
I remember when we were in Mexico, it was an adjustment getting use to no A/C. I do believe I lost 10 lbs.... due to sweating. Thank goodness we had fans. By the end of the week I was starting to get use to it. Another trip, I remember it being comfortable during the day and FREEZING at night! We took a heater with us and boy was it popular!
Wow!, Summer is right around the corner for you. Stay cool!

  4. LOL! every year when we have our first days that the temp is less than about 65 outside, my otherwise very tough & macho husband runs around shivering and complaining like a big ninny, and freaks out if i let our son walk barefoot inside the house. he's from an area in Mexico known as Tierra Caliente! we do save money on A/C because in the summer i actually keep the thermostat at 78 day/75 night. in the winter the heating is expensive b/c he just has to have it at 74 day/72 night. but winter lasts about five minutes here. and i don't have to worry about him messing with the thermostat ever since we got a new electronic one with buttons and a little display screen. he doesn't do "computers"!

That is so funny! Loved your story. Glad to see I'm not alone. Guess it is good for you that he doesn't do "computers".... looks like I'll never have full control over mine. LOL

  7. Sounds like me and Juan at night with the fan. You have to stand firm on that one Tara. Otherwise your whole paycheck will be going to the electric bill.

    1. Yes you are right Jennifer! I'd much rather be cooler. You can always put on more clothes! Our heat is gas and that bill can get super expensive!!!!

  9. We have the same battle in my house! And in my classroom...I am always hot and everyone else is always cold. Glad I am not the only one! To be honest, I worry what it will be like when I start "the change"-- wonder if what is now just a funny "sweaty vs. chilly" argument will turn into a hormonal rage ;-p Only time will tell. Until then, I'll just keep turning the thermostat down after everyone else turns it up!

    1. Jen,
I've wondered the same thing. I have a feeling I'll turn into a hormonal wreck and threaten lives if anyone tries to touch the thermostat! lol

  10. OMG. I have this issue with mi esposo, but in the car. He loves running the heat so high that it feels like somebody is smothering me with a pillow. It's the worst feeling for someone who's claustrophobic. His answer to me: "Just close the vent." Yeah. I don't think so. Makes me wish for an invisible force field. *lol* To get back at him, I've considered getting a second remote so I can change the channels on him when he's not looking. : D

    1. Ezzy! You crack me up! Too funny! If you get that 2nd remote...keep it a secret! That would be even funnier. But in all seriousness...what is it with these men wanting to stay warm??? I feel ya on the heat in the car issue. Sometimes if it is freezing outside and I've got the heat on I'll still crack my window because I can not stand that "smothered" feeling! Besos!

  11. Wow, this is soooooo like my inlaws. They are ALWAYS cold. Thank goodness they dont have central AC/heating or the heat would be running when it 75 degrees out. I kid you not!

When I attwmpt to turn on one fan it gets secretly turned off when Im not looking because "hacer dano" ... It will harm you. Even when its 80degrees out, there is some ailment that can be attributed toa fan being on! LoL

    1. That is so funny! You should start going around saying ese calor se hace daño! and start turning on all the fans. Love your comments amiga!

  12. En el rancho de mi mexicano - there is no heat, no air conditioning. None in the entire pueblito. Fortunately, it's in the mountains so summers are NOT beastly hot. In January, the month of dia del muerto of his papa, there is a cold that pierces the bone. I've decided it must be a strange anomaly because there is no frost, amaryllis bloom in the courtyard, fruit and flowers set on the orange tree but I shiver from sundown to sunup. Two months ago, my Mexican thought I'd be more comfortable if we took a small space heater but failed to consider the wiring in la casita. Two light bulbs, one steam iron and the space heater blew two fuses. On a positive note, I had an opportunity to see zillions of stars on that clear, dark night. And, at home we constantly readjust the thermostat - him to 78, me to 68.

    1. Cecy,
Thanks for commenting and sharing your story! I don't know what it is about space heaters, but we even have that problem in our house from time to time. I know when I go to vacuum, if a space heater is on... I'm going to flip a breaker off.
      =)
