La Sequia

Technical difficulties.  Yes, I know it is not Thursday, but if you are a regular reader you know that this post was originally posted on a Thursday.  I went back in to add the button and it reposted it  today.  Oops!

Throwback Thursdays

I'm going to be doing something a little different on Thursdays.
On my Throwback Thursday posts, you'll find a picture, song, memory, anything from the past.  Everyone is welcomed to join in.  If you decide to participate, please stop by my blog and leave your link in the comment section below.  Gracias!

La Sequia

This is a picture of  la sequia in the rancho where my hubby is from.  I'll never forget the 1st time I saw it!  QUE HERMOSA!!  The Mexican's familia probably thought I was crazy because I was always snapping pictures of it.

Hubby is from Coahuila,  northern Mexico.  It was very hot and dry when I visited.  This stream of water that went for miles and miles was beautiful to me.

If you look closely in the picture above you can see some kids playing in the water. I really wish I would have taken the time to stick my feet in and enjoy the beauty that surrounded me.  Hopefully one day I will have the chance again.

Here are a few more pictures I took...

There were beautiful trees full of green leaves just inviting you to sit in the shade!

I remember drawing pictures when I was a child and having little streams in my drawings.  It's hard to believe that many years later, in a different country, I saw what I had always pictured in my head.

The Mexican never really understood my obsession with la sequia.  While on a walk with his sister, I started taking a lot of pictures and wanted to take even more. I think she thought I was a little weird... so I tried to chill out a bit with all my picture taking.

I snuck this photo, just because I was amazed.  This young girl was cooling off after washing clothes.  I thought about the hard work it took to wash those clothes by hand.  I also thought about how lucky she was to enjoy that cool little dip she took.  Oh! How I so wanted to join her.  I would have even helped with the clothes.  I didn't dare say anything to my cuñada.  She'd probably really think I was crazy then...

  1. I love the Throwback Thursday idea, and I will get a post going later today. . . I might go way back and have to scan a photo or two.

Right now, I have a question to ask. Why are the lower trunks of the trees painted white (is it paint or something else?)? I'm really curious about that for some reason.

    1. Susan,
I would love for you to join in on the fun! Can't wait to read about what you post!

As for the trees... I wondered the same thing. Hubby always told me for decoration. Decoration??? Apparently he was correct. I've also been told it helps to protect the trees against insects....and also so "they look nice." Interesting right?

I'd love to hear what someone has to say who actually lives in Mexico or another part of the world where they do this.

    2. I did post! http://www.borderlinesavage.com/2012/04/throwback-thursday-first-edition.html

I managed to work Poland, Mexico, and Guatemala into the post, as well as a photo, a story, and two videos, lol!

I will ask El Esposo about the trees, but I have a feeling I will get the same answer you did.

    4. I have the tree answer! According to El Esposo, that's not just white paint. They mix in a calcium based powder that is also used in construction, and the calcium keeps bugs from climbing up the trees and destroying flowers, leaves, and fruits. He thinks it's something about the smell that repels the bugs.

  2. Que buena idea y bonita memoria, Tara! Thank you for sharing. Isn't it funny how some memories burn themselves into our memories? I bet you can hear, feel, smell everything from la sequia if you close your eyes, too. Heck, I want to jump in. *lol* Love this. I'll try to participate next week. : )

  3. Haha...Tara, you are too cute! When I was little, we used to live in the country and had streams like that we would play in. This one from your hubby's hometown is so beautiful though. I totally get your obsession. :)

  4. Tara, thanks for stopping by my blog. This picture brought back many memories for me. My grandfather used to paint the trunks of all the trees white. When I asked him why, he said to keep the "hormigas" off the tree. He learned this when he was living in Mexico with his family before moving to the United States.

    1. Very interesting Bonnie! Thanks for filling me in. Hubby tends to be a little "vague" with his answers. LOL

  6. I don't know how I missed your blog as I searched and searched for blogs that had anything Mexican/TexMex for my Fiesta-Cinco de Mayo blog. This story is precious. Reminds me of the time my mom took us to Delicias, Chih. MX where she grew up. We stayed with her elderly aunt who lived next to a small river. It was beautiful!! I too loved being underneath the shady trees feeling the breeze. I didn't appreciate it as much then as I do now. I love your blog title by the way, hubby and I are the same except reverse :) If you have time, my linky party is almost ending, (tomorrow night at midnight), would you please consider entering any or all ;) of your posts?? My linky party is for all things Mexican/TexMex in honor of Cinco de Mayo. I need more stories like yours :) Hope to see you there! http://isavortheweekend.blogspot.com/2012/04/fiesta-cinco-de-mayo-linky-party.html
