Cabbage Patch Kids

Did you grow up in the 80's?  If so, you probably remember the Cabbage Patch Doll frenzy going on.  These dolls were a hot item.  Stores could not keep them stocked.  People were fighting each other trying to grab the last Cabbage Patch Kid on the shelf.

The dolls came with a birth certificate and their name was already picked out.  The dolls smelled like baby powder and the designer Xavier Roberts signed his name on the little bottoms of the dolls.

These dolls were so hard to find.  My grandmother gave me my 1st Cabbage Patch Kid doll and I remember being on top of the world.  Her name was Henrietta.

Then my best friend broke the news to me that a shipment of dolls had just came in and her father bought her a boy.  I begged my parents to take me to the store to see if we could find a boy.  My parents and I hopped in the car and drove to the store.

There were only a couple left.  All of the caucasion dolls were gone.  I begged my parents!  I have to have a boy! I picked mine out.  His name was Humphrey.   Mmmmm!  He smelled so good.  Just like baby powder.

My friend and I would take our dolls for a walk around the neighborhood every day in their strollers!  We were serious about our Cabbage Patch Kids!  I remember once, feeling heartbroken because someone couldn't believe that my parents had purchased me an African American doll.  I couldn't understand why this was a big deal.  I now understand racism and prejudice more clearly than I did back then.

I'm sure I have Henrietta and Humphrey around here somewhere.  I have some boxes my parents gave me up in the attic.  Just thinking about those dolls makes me want to go drag them out of the box to see if they still have that baby powder smell.

Did anyone out there have a Cabbage Patch Kid doll growing up?  Do you remember their name?

  2. Heck yeah I remember cabbage patch kids! And I had a few! I remember getting my first one in second grade. I told my other dolls that I wouldn't forget them just because I got the cabbage patch doll! LOL!

I got another one or two. I do recall getting one that had my name! Her name was Valerie, which is spelled differently than my name which is Valarie.

I also had the cabbage patch pet, a Koosa. I named her Cindy. She had a collar on where I put her name! What memories!

    1. Sounds like you were right there with all of us and a tad bit Cabbage Patch obsessed. I remember searching and searching for one named "Tara." Having a cabbage patch doll with my name would have been the coolest thing!

  3. You didn't need to grow up in the 80's. Those of us that had kids growing up in the 80's especially girls didn't play with the dolls but paid for the dolls. I think it was great that you ending up with an African American one. Good life lesson. I bet you had "my little pony" too.

  9. I remember clearly my desperate want for a Cabbage Patch Kids doll back in 1983. I was really too old to play with dolls, but I got swept up in the craziness of the time. I remember my mom calling around to lots of stores and going to several. We finally found a Toys R Us that had a wait list. I don't remember what number we were, but it seemed to take weeks and weeks for mine to come in. What was unfortunate tho was that once your number was called, you had no choice in picking which doll you wanted. They just handed you one. :( Perhaps because I was a bit too old to play with dolls or because I hadn't gotten to pick mine out personally, I never really played with my Cabbage Patch Kids doll :(
